Highly efficient electron stimulated desorption of [O.sup.+] from gadolinia-doped ceria surfaces
Article Abstract:
Highly efficient electron stimulated desorption of [O.sup.+] from gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) surfaces annealed at 850 K in ultrahigh vacuum is examined. The interactions of water and molecular oxygen molecules with GDC surfaces has resulted in a decrease in [O.sup.+] desorption and the dependence of [O.sup.+] kinetic energies on the incident electron energy and temperature has revealed surface charging as a result of electron trapping, hole trapping and electron-hole recombination.

Roles of proton and electric field in the electroreduction of O2 on Pt(111) surfaces: Results of an ab-initio molecular dynamics study
Article Abstract:
The electroreduction of O2 on the Pt(111) surface is studied with Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations of O2/Pt(111), O2 + H(super +) (H2O)(sub 3)/Pt(111), and O2 + H(super +) (H2O)(sub 3) + e(super -)/Pt(111). At 350 K, a low-coverage O2(1/12 ML) is rapidly reduced with a rather low energy barrier via a one-end chemisorbed precursor.

Bonding of molecular solids probed by low-energy H+ scattering. Water and oxygen on Pt(111)
Article Abstract:
Low-energy H+ ions are scattered from condensed O2 and H2O layers formed on the Pt(111) surface to analyze the nature of bonding of molecular solids. The mechanism of neutralization and reionization of H+ is discussed on the basis of localization/ delocalization of the valance holes.
